Having a 6 diesel for 3 years without issue is not itself indicative of a future without problems. The DPF should be considered part of long-term servicing, and will need to be changed at some point in the future as it breaks down. There are cheaper aftermarket options than going through Mazda directly though.
A friend of mine with a Mazda 6 2.0 diesel had dpf problems within 600 (mostly motorway )miles of purchase - from new! - followed by numerous visits to the dealer, All OK now though. The best diesel DPFs seem to be the closed coupled ones which usually achive passive regen.
Turn the steering wheel to full lock at very slow speeds to the right and the left and listen for the sound, a quiet car park is usually the best place to do this. But it is crucial to keep an eye on the oil level. if it rises, fuel is getting into the sump and the engine oil needs to be changed promptly.

Like I have said several times on various forums, there is never a fault with the DPF, its just doing its job as any filter does, the fault lies upstream causing excessive carbon deposits.
